Buying-decision guide

Should I buy this pallet?

A step-by-step framework for deciding whether a liquidation pallet is worth buying: read the manifest, model recovery, subtract fees and freight, then set a maximum bid. Below: the four-step framework, then 33 field-tested articles grouped by the decision they help you make.

Step 1

Read the manifest before the price

Line count, retail total, condition grade, and how much of the retail sits in the top ten SKUs. A lot where 70% of the value is one TV is a different risk than 400 evenly priced items.

Step 2

Apply a recovery rate you can defend

Manifest retail is not revenue. Apparel typically recovers 8-15% of retail, general merchandise 15-25%, electronics 25-40%, power tools 30-45%. Use the band for the category mix in front of you.

Step 3

Subtract every real cost

Buyer premium, LTL freight plus accessorials, marketplace fees (eBay ~13.25%, Amazon ~15%, Mercari 10%), shipping supplies, and the hours you will spend sorting and listing.

Step 4

Set a maximum bid and stop there

Work backwards from your target return to the ceiling price. The number exists so the auction cannot talk you past it.

Deciding what to pay

Maximum bid, buyer premium, and the ceiling that still clears your target return.

Reading the manifest and grade

Manifested vs. unmanifested, A/B/C/D grades, and the lines that hide the loss.

The math that decides it

Recovery rates, marketplace fees, freight, and sorting labor against real numbers.

Where the pallets come from

Retailer and marketplace sources, and how their lots actually behave.

Avoiding the expensive mistakes

Scams, risk, dead inventory, and the lots experienced buyers walk away from.

Frequently asked

How do I know if a liquidation pallet is worth buying?
Estimate realistic recovery on the manifest retail (usually 8-15% for apparel, 25-40% for electronics, 30-45% for tools), subtract marketplace fees, freight, and sorting labor, then compare what is left to the current bid. If the bid is above your maximum bid at your target return, walk away.
What is a maximum bid on a pallet?
The highest price you can pay and still hit your target return after buyer premium, freight, marketplace fees, and labor. Pallet IQ calculates it from your manifest so the ceiling is set before the auction closes, not after.
Can I evaluate an unmanifested pallet?
Yes, but with wider ranges. Use category averages and lot-type pricing bands instead of line-item retail, and lower your maximum bid to price in the uncertainty.
