The short answer

If you have never bought a pallet, start here. A conservative playbook for your first three purchases.

Before you buy anything

  1. Choose your resale channel first. eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Amazon FBA all have different unit economics.
  2. Register a business (LLC or sole prop is fine) and open a business bank account. Mixing personal and business money will destroy your ability to see if this is working.
  3. Set a budget you can afford to lose 100% of. Not "hope to lose", actually can lose.

Your first three pallets

Pallet 1: Small, high-mix, cheap

A sub-$300 pallet of general merchandise. Goal: learn the physical workflow. Unboxing, sorting, cleaning, photographing, listing, packing, shipping.

Pallet 2: One category, mid-size

A $500-$1000 pallet in one category (tools, kitchen, apparel, or small electronics). Goal: learn how to price that category and what sells fast versus slow.

Pallet 3: Repeat and refine

Buy another pallet in the same category as #2. Now you have baseline data. Compare pallet-over-pallet performance.

Bookkeeping from day one

Capture every cost: bid, buyer fee, freight, storage, labor, listing fees, shipping supplies. If you cannot do this, you cannot know if you are profitable.

The one mistake to avoid

Do not buy a big-ticket pallet ($3,000+) as your first purchase. You will overpay because you do not yet know how to read a manifest, and one bad early purchase will end your entire reseller journey.
